The European Commission knows well how crucial it is that European citizens accept new security measures. We might talk about limiting certain rights for all European citizens when it comes to security measures generally. It is essential to create security measures that do not affect human rights but are able to protect all European citizens all.

The EU authorities are now focusing their security efforts by increasing the budget for border and migration policies and harmonization.

The massive increase in funding, which totals EUR43.9bn, compared to EUR19.7bn between 2014-2020, will drive a massive increase in military spending and further externalize the EU’s borders. It will also support the expansion of the EU border agency Frontex.

What is ETIAS, and how will it affect the security of European borders?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which is used to grant travel authorizations to countries within the Schengen Area, is an electronic system. The EU Member State of First Destination will make the final decision about crossing the external border. ETIAS will perform pre-travel screening for travelers who have visa-free access within the Schengen Area. This allows the Member States to refuse authorization to anyone they consider to be a security risk, irregular migration, or health threat. Visa-free travelers must have valid travel documentation and an ETIAS authorization to cross any external Schengen border.

The EU member states’ border management agencies currently lack information on travelers who are exempted from visa requirements to enter the EU.ETIAS will be an important tool to address this information gap. It will support security screening and risk assessment for travelers, strengthening the Schengen Area’s internal security.Similar pre-travel authorization systems are in place in Australia, Canada, and the USA.

It’s easy. ETIAS will verify the identity information provided by travelers in their applications against a variety of databases. Any concerns regarding an application will be verified further and manually processed. The new ETIAS visa waiver will go live in 2025, and obtaining an ETIAS authorization will be a very straightforward process.

ETIAS is designed to be easy, quick, and user-friendly. The online application shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes, and approval should be granted within a few minutes for more than 95%.The one-time ETIAS fee will be charged to all travelers. Travelers below the age of 18 and those over 70 are exempt from this payment. The ETIAS authorization is valid for three years and can be used for unlimited entries. The travel authorization may be revoked or canceled if the conditions for issuing it are not met.

Practically, the new system will expedite travelers and make entry into Europe much faster and easier for millions of passengers. Border guards at Schengen Area’s border crossing points will scan documents electronically to register the traveler in the Entry/Exit System. This triggers an ETIAS query.Travelers with valid travel authorization will be allowed to continue their journey provided all other entry conditions are met.Border guards will refuse entry to any traveler who does not have a valid ETIAS travel authorization.

A multiple entry visa is a specific type of travel authorization that allows visitors to enter a country numerous times during the visa's validity period. This visa type is particularly beneficial for frequent travelers, eliminating the need for repeated visa applications and providing increased flexibility for travel plans.
