What is ETIAS?
ETIAS means European Travel Information and Authorization System. It is a new system designed by the EU for tracking the visa-free third-country nationals traveling to Schengen countries. Everyone who traveled without a visa to the EU will require ETIAS since 2025.
Who will need ETIAS?
Third-country nationals who can now travel without a visa to Europe will need ETIAS to travel to Schengen Area starting from 2025. ETIAS will be required for short-term travelers only, who will spend less than 90 days in the EU. The eligibility list includes the minors, as well.
How much is the ETIAS visa fee?
ETIAS application fee is expected to vary from 5 to 7 Euros. However, the EU intends to make it free of charge for minors. Paying the price is essential before applying. Otherwise, ETIAS will not be granted. Applicants can pay with debit/credit cards.
What is the purpose of ETIAS?
The purpose of ETIAS is to strengthen the security of both EU residents and travelers. ETIAS is designed to fight against irregular migration high epidemic risks of terrorism posed by visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. However, it will make travel easier for risk-free visitors.
Is ETIAS mandatory?
ETIAS is mandatory for non-EU citizens who are nationals of the visa-exempt countries and wish to visit any Schengen Area member countries. ETIAS is a requirement for anyone planning short-term travel for leisure, business, or medical purposes to the EU starting from 2025.
How do I get an ETIAS waiver?
To obtain ETIAS authorization, travelers need to submit an online ETIAS application form and pay the fee. The application requires basic personal information, background, and eligibility questions. The only document required for applying is a valid biometric passport.
When will ETIAS be implemented?
ETIAS will be implemented in 2025. The program development began in 2016 and was planned to launch in 2022. However, due to the issues presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, the date has been moved to 2025. There will be a 6-month transition period after launch.
Is ETIAS a visa?
ETIAS is not a visa; it is a travel authorization for short-term visitors to the Schengen area. ETIAS applies to third-country nationals who are exempt from visa requirements in the EU. On the other hand, Schengen visas are required for travelers who cannot enter the EU without a permit.
Do I need ETIAS?
You need ETIAS if you are a citizen of any non-European visa-exempt country. Currently, there are 59 countries under the visa-free travel agreement with the EU. All these countries will participate in the ETIAS travel authorization after ETIAS is launched in 2025. Even if you are a minor (under 18) you still need ETIAS. However, your application as a minor should be filled out by your parents or your legal guardians. You may also be exempt from the ETIAS fees as a minor.
Can ETIAS be denied?
Yes, the ETIAS application can be denied if you do not meet eligibility criteria or essential requirements. If you fail to provide correct information regarding your personal data, your passport is set to expire soon, or you have a suspicious travel history or criminal record you will have issues with obtaining ETIAS. You may have to apply for a visa instead of ETIAS in case your application still gets rejected after re-applying.
