ETIAS Travel Authorization for Timorese Citizens
Citizens of Timor-Leste (or East Timor) will need to apply for the ETIAS by the end of 2022 to travel to 26 European nations.
These 26 countries make up the Schengen Area, an open border region that allows travel between member states without any border controls except when the visitor arrives. The Schengen countries are France, Spain, and Germany, as well as Italy,
Greece, Spain, Germany, Greece, and Sweden. Currently, East Timorese can travel to countries within the Schengen Area with no additional paperwork beyond their passport. Timor-Leste has been added to the list of visa-exempt Schengen states. By the end of 2022, the ETIAS visa waiver is an additional requirement. To visit the European countries, East Timor visitors must register with this visa waiver program.

Why do East Timorese Travelers need ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIS) is being implemented to increase security at Europe’s borders. This will make Europe safer for European citizens and international visitors such as Timor-Leste.
Each East Timorese applicant’s information is compared against the following international databases:
• Europol
• Interpol
• The ETIAS watchlist in Europe
• VIS
• SIS
• EURODAC
Border control authorities in the Schengen Area can identify security risks before each East Timor traveler arrives and prevent them from coming to Europe by pre-screening them. ETIAS can help prevent and combat the following.
• Illegal immigration
• Terrorism
• Drug smuggling
• Human trafficking
• International crime
The ETIAS application asks the Timor-Leste traveler to answer questions about their employment, past travel (especially in conflict zones), and criminal records (if any). This will help identify security risks.
ETIAS offers greater security for travelers visiting European countries. Additional benefits are available for East Timorese tourists
• Pre-arrival checks and digitized data mean fewer border controls and faster entry into the country of origin (especially when using e-Passport gateways).
• ETIAS valid for 3 Years after the issue
• You can use it for multiple entries to the Schengen Area
• After the traveler arrives in the Schengen Area, they are allowed to travel between member countries without any additional border checks
Are Timorese Nationals Required a Visa to Travel to Europe?
East Timorese citizens do not require a visa to travel to any country within the Schengen Area. There is a maximum time limit for visa-free travel to the Schengen Area (90 days), and the traveler will require a long-term visa.
The ETIAS visa waiver will make it an additional requirement to travel to Schengen countries. ETIAS does not qualify as a visa. It is a travel authorization similar to Canada’s eTA and the USA’s ESTA. It will be easier to get than a traditional consular Visa.
Most European countries that are not part of the Schengen Area grant visa exemptions to citizens of Timor-Leste. This means that no visa is needed. These countries include:
• Montenegro
• Moldova
• Cyprus
• Croatia
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Andora
• The UK
Although, some European states ask that East Timorese travelers possess a valid visa. These include the following conditions:
• Ukraine
• Turkey
• Serbia
• Macedonia
• Georgia
• Ireland
• Belarus
• Albania
It is crucial to ensure that you have the correct visa for each country you intend to visit before you book travel to Europe.
How do you obtain an ETIAS for East Timorese Nationals
Timor-Leste nationals will be allowed to enter Europe’s Schengen Area by registering their data with ETIAS. You can do this quickly and easily online by filling out an ETIAS application.
Traveling to an embassy is unnecessary; registration can be done entirely at the applicant’s office or home.
The East Timorese applicant must fill out a section with their passport details, personal data, and travel plans. Finally, they will have to answer security questions.
The applicant must supply the following contact and personal data.
• Full name
• Date and country of your birth
• Nationality
• Current address
• Email address and phone number for contact
You must also include details about the passport you intend to travel with. This is because the ETIAS authorization can be digitally linked to the key registered at this stage.
A traveler arriving at European border control with a different passport than the one on their ETIAS registration may be refused entry. A traveler who loses, steals, or damages their access must be registered with ETIAS with a new passport.
Passport information required for ETIAS registration includes
• Passport number
• Passport country
• Date of publication
• Expiry date
The applicant must provide details about their travel plans in Europe, including the country they are arriving in and the dates they plan to leave.
After the ETIAS application has been submitted, it is checked against international databases to determine if there are any threats to European security. Most applications will be revised within 24 hours, but applicants may need to allow up to 3 working days. The applicant will receive an email confirming that the ETIAS authorization has been granted to travel to Schengen countries in Europe.
