ETIAS Travel Authorization for Moldovans
Under the Schengen Area’s visa waiver agreement, nationals of Moldova can travel to all 26 Schengen member states without a visa requirement until the end of 2025. Moldovans can travel to Schengen nations for short-term tourism, leisure, or business trips by presenting their valid passport at the border.
Beginning in late 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries — including Moldovans — will be obliged to bring an additional requirement to access the Schengen Area.
Moldovans visiting any Schengen country must apply for ETIAS travel authorization online before departure.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), the new mandatory travel permit for the EU, is currently being developed alongside other systems such as the Entry-Exit System (EES).
ETIAS Validity for Moldovans
The ETIAS travel authorization for Moldovans is valid for three years from approval. The passport used to apply remains valid.
If the Moldovan passport used to apply for the ETIAS expires before the three-year validity of the visa waiver has expired, the ETIAS becomes null and void.
Moldovan citizens will be required to apply for a new ETIAS authorization using the information contained in their new passport, which includes the following:
• Passport identification number
• Country of origin
• Date of publication
• Date of expiration
The ETIAS entitles Moldovan nationals to enter and remain in Schengen territory for a maximum of 90 days in any 180 days.
Once the ETIAS-granted 90-day stay for Moldovans expires, travelers must spend the next 90 days outside Schengen borders to be granted another 90-day stay within member nations.

Moldovan minors traveling to the Schengen area with their parents or legal guardians must also have a valid ETIAS.
Parents or legal guardians may apply for an ETIAS on behalf of a minor.
Filling out the ETIAS online form is simple and should take no more than ten minutes.
Applicants will be required to provide personal, passport, and travel information, which may include the following:
• Complete name
• Birthplace
• Birthdate
• Passport number Date and country of passport issuance
• Date of expiration of the passport
• The first country to be admitted to the Schengen Zone
• Date of anticipated arrival
• The purpose of the journey
Additionally, applicants will be required to answer straightforward questions about their health and security, such as their deportation history or criminal records.
Moldovan applicants are advised to respond truthfully and accurately to these questions.
Moldovans convicted of minor offenses may still be granted ETIAS if they are not deemed a threat to the EU.
ETIAS for Moldovans Documents Required
To successfully submit an ETIAS from Moldova online request, citizens must have a valid Moldovan passport for at least three months beyond the intended visit to the Schengen Zone. Because the ETIAS visa waiver for Moldovans is a digital document, travelers will also be required to provide a valid email address.
Once approved, Moldovan ETIAS applicants will receive an email with a digital copy of their ETIAS travel authorization.
This email address will be used solely to communicate with the applicant regarding their travel documents and ETIAS application status.
The ETIAS for Moldovans will require applicants to pay a fee online using a valid credit or debit card.
ETIAS for Moldovans Overview of Security
The ETIAS and EES will assist European authorities in obtaining essential information on visa-free nationals to cross-check submitted data against a variety of security databases, including the following:
• Interpol
• Europol
• SIS
• VIS
• Eurodac
The screening of third-country visitors before their departure from the area will expedite border checks for travelers who have not been deemed a threat to the zone’s security.
Prescreening nationals from visa-exempt states such as Moldova also aims to assist authorities in denying access to individuals deemed a threat to the Schengen Area’s and its residents’ well-being and security.
Despite its location in Europe, Moldova is neither a member of the European Union nor a Schengen country.
As a result, beginning in late 2022, Moldovans wishing to travel to the European Union will be required to submit an online request for an ETIAS travel authorization.
Moldavians Visiting the Schengen Zone
By the end of 2025, nationals of Moldova visiting a Schengen country or transiting through the Schengen Area on their way to a third-country destination will be required to possess an approved ETIAS travel authorization.
The ETIAS travel authorization is a mandatory requirement for Moldovans traveling to the Schengen Area on short trips of up to 90 days.
The travel authorization can be obtained online in less than ten minutes.
The ETIAS is not a visa; it is a travel authorization. It is much easier to obtain for Moldovans, as it does not require an interview at an embassy or consulate.
Additionally, the ETIAS entitles Moldovan holders to freely enter and circulate within any of the 26 Schengen member states for purposes such as:
• Tourism Industry
• Health
• Transportation
Procedural Time for ETIAS for Moldovans
The vast majority of ETIAS requests submitted from eligible visa-exempt nations should be automatically approved within 24 hours of submission and payment of the ETIAS fee.
Nevertheless, a small number of applications may need manual processing.
In this case, either a Central Unit within the European Border and Coast Guard Agency or a Member State team will revise.
Manual revision may be required if the data from a Moldovan's ETIAS application raises a red flag in any security database or if the automated process returns an undecided result. When an ETIAS from Moldova requires manual assessment, the processing time may take up to 2-3 business days, after which the applicant will receive an email update on their ETIAS status.
...
Moldovans are advised to apply for an ETIAS at least three business days before their anticipated travel dates. If a Moldovan's ETIAS application is denied, they will receive detailed instructions they can appeal the decision via the email address they provided during the application process.
