European Travel Authorization for Brazilians
Brazil is one of the visa-exempt countries for the Schengen zone, allowing Brazilian citizens to travel freely to Europe without further visa requirements. All Brazilian nationals can enter 22 Schengen Area countries and four non-EU nations – Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Iceland. The travelers can remain in any of the mentioned countries for up to 90 days. Brazilians need to apply for a Schengen visa for trips longer than that. As mentioned, Brazilians do not require visas for short-term travels to Schengen Area. However, the requirements will change by the end of 2025. All nationals of visa-exempt countries, including Brazil, will need to apply for the ETIAS travel authorization for their short-term visits to Europe. ETIAS online application for Brazilians will permit travels for leisure, business, transit, and medical purposes.
ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System. The main reasons behind creating the system are the European border and immigration security across the member states.
ETIAS will be used for pre-screening the travelers who could previously entered the Schengen Area without visas. In case of any doubts or risks associated with the traveler, they will be denied entry to Europe.
ETIAS will allow travelers to complete the application forms fully electronically, requiring no visits to embassies and consulates. However, submitting the ETIAS application will be mandatory for all Brazilian travelers from 2025, and the validity of ETIAS will be checked at the borders, as well. All information regarding the applicants will be checked against several security databases, such as Interpol and Europol, to check whether the data provided corresponds to the information recorded within the databases. If everything fits perfectly, the applicants will receive approved ETIAS linked to their biometric passports.
Requirements for Brazilian citizens visiting Europe
Brazilian citizens are currently exempted from the requirement of a Schengen visa to enter the European area for short-stay periods. Brazilian citizens traveling to Europe to visit their relatives for a short-term stay of up to 90 days need to present their passports to immigration officials upon arrival.
To qualify for a European visa waiver, Brazilian citizens will have to show their approved ETIAS authorization by 2025. Brazilian citizens must present their passport and approved travel authorization before boarding an aircraft to Europe.
To obtain the ETIAS visa exemption for Brazilians, citizens must have the following items on hand:
• A Brazilian biometric passport that has at least three months validity remaining after their intended departure
• A credit card or debit card that applicants can use to pay the ETIAS visa waiver fee for Brazilians
• Valid email address to receive a digital copy of the approved ETIAS
Brazilian citizens must have a valid, biometric, machine-readable passport and their approved ETIAS to enter any European or non-European country.
ETIAS will electronically be associated with the exact Brazilian passport submitted during the application process. Brazil’s dual citizens must use the same passport to apply for ETIAS. ETIAS cannot be transferred to any other passport. If ETIAS does not approve a passport, travelers may be refused entry to an airplane or at the border if they arrive in a Schengen country.
While a traveler does not need to print a paper copy, since the ETIAS Brazilian applicants will be receiving via email in PDF format, it may still be beneficial to have a copy on hand while they travel. It is a good idea to keep a copy in case you are asked to show your ETIAS to authorities during your stay in the Schengen Area.

Applying for ETIAS From Brazil
Brazilians who visit Europe with the ETIAS will have unlimited access to the Schengen area for the duration of the visa waiver or until their passport expires, whichever comes first. ETIAS allows Brazilian passport holders multiple entry options of up to 90 days in a 180-day period.
The validity of the ETIAS visa waiver is three years after it was granted to a Brazilian citizen. If the passport submitted to the ETIAS application procedure expires within three years, the ETIAS will become null when the passport electronically linked with it expires. It will be mandatory for Brazilian citizens to travel to Europe with an approved ETIAS visa waiver by the end of 2025. To travel to the EU, Brazilian citizens, including minors, must apply for an ETIAS.
ETIAS officials advise Brazilian passport holders that they apply for the European Visa Waiver at least three days before the date of their intended arrival in the Schengen Area. ETIAS officials recommend this time frame to allow sufficient processing and screening time to approve the Europe visa waiver. If additional information or documents are required to process an ETIAS application, representatives can reach certain applicants via email.
Brazilian citizens should be aware that the Schengen visa waiver does not guarantee entry to Schengen countries. However, it does allow the traveler to travel to Europe. The immigration officer who greets you at the border will decide if you can enter the Schengen country. You may be required to submit following documents/information:
• Schengen immigration officials may ask for additional supporting documents at the border.
• Evidence of financial resources to assist the traveler during their stay at the Schengen Zone
• Return or onwards tickets to a destination that the citizen can travel to at the end of their stay
• Proof that you have medical travel insurance. Although it is not mandatory, it is good to insure yourself when traveling
ETIAS From Brazil Security Procedures
The EU ETIAS visa waiver permits Brazilian citizens to travel to any European country in the Schengen accord after being screened by the EU Border Control. To ensure the highest security, all information in ETIAS applications will have to be checked against several security databases such as Interpol and ETIAS watchlist. SIS, VIS, and EURODAC are some of the databases that ETIAS can use to identify potential security threats to Europe. These databases contain information on individuals suspected of criminal activity to block them from entering Europe. They promote border control cooperation and increase cooperation among law enforcement agencies from different Schengen nations. ETIAS and the security databases that cross-check applicants' information will help identify illegally entering persons at Schengen borders. It will also prevent identity theft. These security measures are designed to make Schengen a safer area for Brazilians and Schengen residents. Suppose the applicant is involved in serious criminal activity. ... In that case, an ETIAS visa waiver will not be granted to Brazilian passport holders. While the ETIAS screening system primarily aims to identify and stop terrorist and human trafficking threats and others, certain countries may still allow entry for travelers who have a history of minor criminal offenses. Brazilians who have a history of serious drug-related crimes or those convicted for issues related to public order will likely be denied entry to many Schengen countries.
