Traveling to Schengen states from Antigua & Barbuda
As of now, the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda can freely travel to Schengen member states without any further visa requirements. All they need at the passport control is a valid national passport. However, the travel requirements will change by the end of 2025.
ETIAS, or European Travel and Information Authorization System, was initially approved in 2016 and has been under development since then. According to official information, the ETIAS visa waiver will be in force by the end of 2025 for the nationals of Antigua and Barbuda, along with 59 other visa-exempt countries.
Under the ETIAS travel authorization program, Antigua and Barbuda citizens can travel to any Schengen Zone member state for short-term stays.
It is crucial to remember that ETIAS works for business, leisure, transit, or medical travelers who plan to remain in the EU for less than 90 days.
For stays longer than 90 days, all Antigua and Barbuda nationals need to apply for the Schengen visa. Long-term travelers or travelers who look forward to working, studying,
or living within the EU are not eligible for an ETIAS visa waiver.
As part of the EU intergovernmental initiative, ETIAS’s primary purpose is to pre-screen all travelers from Antigua and Barbuda and the nationals of visa-exempt third countries for possible security risks. The introduction of ETIAS will strengthen the border security and safety of both EU residents and visitors.
ETIAS Visa Waiver Requirements for Antigua & Barabuda
The nationals of Antigua and Barbuda can fill in the online form of ETIAS application in less than ten minutes. They will receive the decision regarding the application status within a few hours, while it could take a couple of days in rare cases. An approved ETIAS will be valid for three consecutive years, or until the indicated passport indicates, whichever comes first.
The applicants do not need to physically visit the embassy or consulate, as in the case of the Schengen visa application. However, if the ETIAS online application has any issues or requires any additional information, applicants may be required to go through the interview with ETIAS officials.
There are three major requirements for Antigua and Barbuda ETIAS applicants:
1. We recommend applying for ETIAS travel authorization at least a couple of days before traveling to the European Union. A valid, biometric passport with at least three months validity from the intended entry date to Europe
2. A valid email address that will receive the decision regarding the ETIAS application status electronically
3. Sufficient funds on credit/debit card to pay the ETIAS application fee
The application form will require the following details to be disclosed:
• First and last name
• Gender
• Nationality
• Date and place of birth
• Passport details (number, expiry/issue date)
• Residential Address
• Phone number
• Email address
• The country of first intended entry
Furthermore, the application will include several security and background eligibility questions that could relate to the traveler’s educational or professional background, past travel history, criminal record, drug abuse, trafficking, terrorism, and others. The information provided during the application will be checked against several security databases. The databases include Interpol and Europol, along with SIS and VIS. If any information mismatches the database, the applicant will get a rejected visa waiver status.

The approved applicants can remain in the European Union for no longer than 90 days. Still, they will not work or study under the ETIAS travel authorization. If any Antigua and Barbuda citizen needs to stay in the Schengen zone longer than 90 days, they need to apply for a Schengen visa instead.
The nationals with dual citizenship should choose a single passport for the ETIAS application and bring the same passport with them to Schengen. ETIAS cannot be transferred from one passport to another one and thus does not make the other passport eligible for travel.
Applying to ETIAS from Antigua & Barbuda
The application procedure for ETIAS is effortless for the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. There are no complex requirements and supporting documents needed for completing it instead of long-term visa applications.
The ETIAS online forms will require no more than 20 minutes to complete. They will deliver the decision regarding the applicant’s status much faster than it happens in the case of long-term visa applications.
After filling in the ETIAS online form, travelers must pay the application fee. As soon as the payment is complete, the system will automatically process the information provided by Antigua and Barbuda citizens. Finally, the decision regarding the travel authorization should reach the applicant’s email address in less than 24 hours.
However, suppose there are any inconsistencies or mistakes within the application. In some instances, the errors on the application form may result in ETIAS denial. In that case, ETIAS will require manual processing, which could take a couple of days.
After ETIAS is issued, it will be electronically linked to an applicant’s passport. Hence, travelers do not need to carry the printed approval on their journey to Europe.
Once issued, the approved ETIAS from Antigua Barbuda is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport. A copy is sent to the applicant’s current email address.
Traveling from Antigua and Barbuda to Europe with ETIAS
Any Antigua and Barbuda national with approved ETIAS can freely enter the Schengen member states. They need to carry their ETIAS-linked passports to the passport control. However, approved ETIAS does not guarantee entry to Europe. The border officials at the checkpoint may decide to refuse the access for other reasons, even if ETIAS is valid.
Furthermore, it is crucial to remember that after three years from issuing the ETIAS or after the passport’s expiry, travelers need to re-apply for the visa waiver.
The application for the ETIAS renewal is the same as the initial procedure for applying for the travel authorization.
