ETIAS Travel Authorization for Malaysians
Currently, residents who travel towards Europe from Malaysia don’t have to obtain visas for short-term stays that last up to 90 days since they are exempt from visa requirements for Schengen passport-free zones. The Schengen Area comprises 22 European Union countries like Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, other countries, and four non-EU nations: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
However, even though Malaysian citizens planning to travel to Europe don’t require visas, in late 2025, they must apply online for the ETIAS visa waiver to travel within the Schengen Area. ETIAS is the abbreviation for European Travel Information and the Authorization System. ETIAS is an electronic visa waiver system intended to increase the security of visa-free travelers
in the region, improve safety at the borders of the EU, and enhance protection for Europeans who reside in that region, the Schengen Zone, and travelers who are visiting it.
The European Parliament approved the ETIAS for Malaysian citizens in the year 2016. However, it will take approximately six years to complete the electronically-mediated visa waiver. The information in an ETIAS application for Malaysia will be scrutinized against various European security databases managed by the EU-LISA (European Union Agency for Operational Management and Large-Scale IT Systems within the area of Freedom, Security, and Justice). This is done to determine any possible threats to Europe before the visa waiver is approved.
Europe Visa Waiver Requirements for Malaysian Citizens
At the end of 2025, all citizens from Malaysia must apply for an ETIAS to be able to fly to Schengen Area countries for a short stay for business, tourist, or transit for medical reasons. The passengers will have to show their valid ETIAS before boarding an aircraft bound for Europe.
To be able to make an application for an ETIAS account first, you need to satisfy the three fundamental ETIAS requirements that apply to Malaysian citizens:
• An authentic Malaysian passport that has at least three months validity left from the date of arrival into the Schengen Area
• A current email address (needed to obtain an approved copy of the ETIAS Visa exemption)
• A debit or credit card (to pay the ETIAS fee
originating from application processing cost)
The applicants for the ETIAS program from Malaysia need to have an identity card that is biometric and machine-readable. ETIAS for Schengen is electronically linked to a personal passport.
...
People who are dual citizens of Malaysia and another must ensure that they use the same passport when filling out the ETIAS application, the same one that they'll later use for travel within Schengen.

Malaysian citizens who try to visit ETIAS countries using wrong passports are most likely to be refused entry on their transporter or be denied entry at Schengen border controls. It’s not necessary to print out a paper copy to show to transport companies and Schengen Area border control because the accepted ETIAS is electronically linked with the user’s passport. However, travelers are advised to print an ETIAS copy to keep with them while in Europe in the event of the need to present it at any time.

Traveling to Europe with ETIAS Malaysia
The ETIAS Europe visa waiver is an authorization for multiple entries that permits Malaysians to travel in a relaxed manner across countries within the Schengen zone. It allows several short stays of up to 90 days during a 180-day timeframe. It is valid for three years from the date of approval or until the holder's passport is due to expire. This means that applying for an ETIAS card is not necessary before any trip within or within the Schengen zone.
ETIAS authorities suggest that Malaysian residents apply for a Europe Visa waiver on at minimum three days (3 days) before the date of entry into the Schengen Area to give enough time for processing to allow that ETIAS to be granted. In some instances, more information might be required from the person applying before an ETIAS that has been approved can be granted.
It is possible for a Malaysia or Europe visa waiver suspended if the conditions to issue the travel permit are no anymore met. It is likely to be the case when the authorities believe that they obtained the ETIAS by giving false or fraudulent information.
...
It is important to remember this: the Schengen Visa waiver offered to Malaysians doesn't guarantee admission into Schengen countries. It merely allows holders to travel within Europe. The final decision on an entry will be taken by immigration officers at the border. additional documents could be required to ensure entry, such as:
• A proof of funds to allow for the period within the Schengen Area. Schengen Area
• Documentation of medical insurance
• Tickets for return flights/tickets to a destination country

ETIAS in Malaysia and Security Procedures
The information supplied for ETIAS visa waiver applications coming from Malaysia will be checked against various information databases to determine any security risks to Europe before the travel authorization is granted. This includes Interpol, SIS, VIS, Europol, and EURODAC.
SIS, VIS, and EURODAC are the components of EURODAC, VIS, and SIS comprise Schengen Area security system and are managed by EU-LISA and is responsible for managing the ETIAS application procedure.
SIS permits Schengen states to communicate information regarding suspect criminals in Europe, stolen assets, and missing individuals. The main goals of the database are to facilitate border control cooperation, enhance collaboration with law enforcement organizations, and allow cooperation in vehicle registration.
VIS is a part of its common EU Visa policy, providing Schengen Countries to share information about visas via a central information system. It gathers biometric information from visa applications and centrally stores the information within a database. It permits European countries to thwart fraud, safeguard travelers by preventing identity theft and enhance security.
EURODAC is used together with SIS and VIS as a fingerprint database that permits Schengen countries to track people illegally crossing European frontiers. EURODAC examines fingerprint databases and instantly recognizes the fingerprints of travelers every when they seek asylum within the European Union. This permits Schengen states to decide who is responsible for reviewing the individual asylum applications of asylum seekers.
An ETIAS permit for visa-free entry to Malaysian citizens could be denied if any serious applicant criminality is discovered in these databases. Because the system focuses on identifying terrorist and human trafficking risks, some countries allow entry for travelers with only a minor criminal history. But, Malaysians with serious drug violations or a public order conviction could be denied entry by several Schengen countries.
